The statue of sprint legend Usain Bolt promised for Water Square Falmouth since 2019 was finally erected recently, but work continues to get it ready for the official unveiling.

"We are waiting on plans from the Ministry of Sports Entertainment and Culture to be fine-tuned before [fixing] a date for the official unveiling to take place," revealed Falmouth Mayor Collen Gager.

The mayor further stated that, when completed, the monument to the sprint legend will feature lights of different colours and water spewing up to eight feet high.

Bolt, a native of Sherwood Content in the parish, holds world records in the 100 and 200 metres, as well as the 4x100-metre relay.

In his decorated career, Bolt won eight Olympic and 11 World Championship gold medals.

Earlier this month, Minister of Sport Olivia Grange said while the statue has already been installed, the official unveiling would not take place until the renovation project – now 95 per cent complete – is fully finished.

“I want to highlight the fact that we’re not going to have the official opening until everything is complete, but at the earliest possible time, we will remove the enclosure so that the people can see the statue," she said.
