Update |St Mary detainee who escaped from hospital back in police custody
Herbie Ballentine, who escaped custody while receiving treatment at the Port Maria Hospital in St Mary last Friday, has surrendered to the police.
The St Mary police have confirmed that Ballentine, also known as ‘Junior’, turned himself in to the Islington Police Station in the company of his attorney on Monday afternoon.
"Ballentine had escaped from custody at the Port Maria Hospital on Friday, October 3, 2025, after receiving treatment following an incident, where he was injured during a confrontation with the police,” said head of the St Mary Police Division, Superintendent Anthony Wallace.
"He managed to escape earlier that day after overpowering an INDECOM [Independent Commission of Investigations] investigator, when temporarily released from handcuffs to sign a document, but made good his escape. Ballentine is expected to face further questioning regarding the original charges and the circumstances surrounding his escape," Wallace added.
Meantime, Wallace is urging anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact the St Mary police at 876-333-9530 or 876-994-4223, Crime Stop at 311, or the nearest police station.
And Wallace pointed out that the St Mary police are committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, ensuring thorough and transparent investigations.
