Two die in crash on Winston Jones Highway in Manchester
Two persons died Friday night after a multi-vehicle crash along the Winston Jones Highway in Manchester. The crash was reportedly triggered when a motorist swerved to avoid hitting a parked trailer.
The deceased have been identified as 34-year-old Adrimar Smith of Heartease district and Evroy Dixon of Content, both in Manchester.
Reports are that about 9:45 p.m., Smith and Dixon were passengers in a 2009 Nissan Tiida motor car when the driver of a Toyota Wish public passenger vehicle veered into the right lane to avoid the stationary trailer.
During the manoeuvre, the rear of the Toyota Wish struck a Mitsubishi motor truck, and the Nissan Tiida then slammed into the vehicles, resulting in extensive damage.
The occupants of the vehicles sustained varying injuries and were assisted to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where Smith and Dixon were pronounced dead.
On Saturday morning, the police advised motorists that the Winston Jones Highway has been reduced to single-lane traffic near the Russell Place district.
It said this is due to a broken-down trailer obstructing one side of the roadway.
Drivers are being urged to proceed with caution, obey the directions of the police on location, and expect minor delays.
The police say efforts are being made to have the trailer removed and the roadway fully reopened as soon as possible.
