Ministry of Agriculture ramps up preparation efforts ahead of Tropical Storm Melissa
The Ministry of Agriculture says it has moved into high gear as it activates its national disaster preparedness protocols in anticipation of the approaching weather system.
Portfolio Minister Floyd Green says the Ministry has mobilised its emergency response teams to safeguard Jamaica’s farmers and fishers and to minimise potential losses in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
“We’ve activated our Agriculture Disaster Risk Management Committee to coordinate a swift and organised response. Our technical teams are on the ground ensuring that our farmers and fishers have the necessary support to prepare and protect their livelihoods,” Green said in a media release on Wednesday.
He said, as part of the Ministry’s preparedness plan, Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) teams have been deployed across Jamaica to support farmers in securing their crops, livestock and infrastructure and to provide on-the-spot guidance.
Fisheries officers from the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) have been dispatched to fishing beaches, especially along the south coast, to ensure vessels are secured, evacuation plans are in place and fishers are advised on safety protocols.
The Ministry’s Agriculture Disaster Risk Management Committee is working closely with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management and other key agencies to coordinate response and relief where necessary.
Farmers and fishers are being urged to take every precaution to protect life and property, including securing equipment and livestock, harvesting mature crops where possible and avoiding going out to sea as the system approaches.
“Preparedness saves lives and livelihoods. We are asking all our stakeholders to act swiftly and responsibly. The Ministry stands ready to support,” Green added.
