NEW YORK:

The funeral for the late Jamaican consul general to New York, Alsion Roach-Wilson, is set for Friday, December 5.

The service will be held at the Community Baptist Church in Englewood, New Jersey, starting at 11 a.m.

Roach-Wilson died at home on November 8 after battling breast cancer.

A condolence book will be opened at the Jamaican Consulate offices at 300 East 42nd Street from Monday, December 1, for four days. People wishing to sign the condolence book can visit the office between 10 a.m to 12 p.m.

In July 2019, Roach-Wilson became Jamaica’s 11th consul general to New York, where she was entrusted with representing Jamaica’s interests and supporting its nationals across 33 states in the US, as well as in Bermuda and Puerto Rico. Her appointment marked the culmination of a successful career and was a testament to her leadership and dedication to her country.

Prior to assuming this role, Consul General Roach-Wilson gained extensive experience in the business sector.

She was born in the parish of St Catherine and attended Redwood Primary and Guy’s Hill High School before migrating to the United States. She then attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and later the American Business Institute’s School of Business.

Roach-Wilson’s belief in giving back to the community was boundless.

She founded the Jamaica Open New York Golf Championship, a pivotal event during Jamaica‘s 52nd Independence anniversary celebrations in New York City, fostering a vibrant and productive relationship between New York City and the Caribbean community.

As a dedicated ambassador and long–term charity sponsor, she supported the Palmyra Foundation and Books4Kids Jamaica.

She collaborated with noted American actor and TV host Steve Harvey and the Caribbean Celebrity Golf Invitational (CCGI) Foundation, providing more than 700 computers to various primary schools in Jamaica.

In her six years as consul general, Roach-Wilson supported numerous other initiatives benefiting Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora.

In August, the Jamaican Government conferred the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) on Roach-Wilson for her contributions to Jamaica’s national development in education, technology, and healthcare capacity-building. Roach-Wilson was previously awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) in 2019 for her philanthropic work.

She is survived by her husband Omar and children Brian, Vanessa, and Patrick.
