The driver who ran off the road into a river in St Elizabeth has been identified by the police as 76-year-old businessman Norman Vikers of Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

According to the police, around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Vikers was driving his pickup along a roadway in Lacovia.

While crossing a bridge, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crashed, and plunged into the river.

The vehicle was extensively damaged, and Vikers suffered severe injuries, the police reported.

The vehicle was successfully retrieved with the assistance of divers from the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard, according to a post on the JDF’s Instagram page on Saturday.

The vehicle ran off the road on Friday, but nightfall forced the suspension of search efforts.

The Black River Traffic Department is investigating the incident.
