Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says the Government’s post-Hurricane Melissa recovery activities in Accompong, St Elizabeth, will go beyond roof repairs to include restoring community infrastructure, including a water system.

“The intervention of the Government will not only be to repair your roofs,” the Prime Minister said.

“We’re going to look at your water situation. I gather there are many water sources around, that there was a water supply system that somehow fell out of use. We’re going to restore that,” he pledged, while addressing the annual Accompong Maroon celebrations on Tuesday, January 6.

The Prime Minister said that the playing field will also be improved.

“The next time that I’m here participating in this commemoration ceremony, you should have a good field, and I make the commitment that we’re going to upgrade this field,” Holness said.

Technical personnel from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) are already in the community carrying out roof repairs.

Holness said that the current phase of works is expected to conclude in the next few weeks, after which an evaluation will be conducted and “if there are more roofs that we can do, we will do more repairs”.

“Speaking to your Chief (Richard Currie) again, I realise that there are some houses that have been totally destroyed. We’re going to take a look at those and see how many of them we can repair,” he added.
