More than money, Jamaica’s credit unions live ‘Fi Mi Family’
Credit Unions operate on a simple but powerful idea of ‘People Helping People’. This is not just a slogan. It is the real foundation of all 23 credit unions across the island. It shapes how they operate, and creates a genuine bond with their over one million members.
Under the theme ‘Fi Mi Credit Union, Fi Mi Family’, credit unions have become a key part of communities everywhere. They show that banking does not have to be cold or impersonal. Instead, it can bring people together, build community, and show care for others.
Credit unions design their products and services around the simple truth that a member’s financial needs are deeply personal. This commitment shapes character-based loans that look at the person, not just the paperwork; life-stage products that grow and change with members from youth to retirement; and empowerment-focused workshops, webinars, and literacy sessions that build members’ confidence about managing their money.
Jamaica’s credit unions measure their success not just by money, but by the good they do. They build schools, sponsor students, support local programmes, visit those in need, and sponsor community events.
As the movement looks to the future, it proves financial institutions can be both economically strong and deeply human. They can build capital, while also building up people and communities.
