The Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA) says an urgent review is now underway following the tragic death of a newborn baby delivered at Cornwall Regional Hospital.

In a press release issued by WRHA, the hospital expressed “deep regret” over the outcome and said it has extended condolences to the 33-year-old first time mother, Shandale Ballentine, and her family.

“The Cornwall Regional Hospital is saddened by the outcome of the case involving the death of Shandale Ballentine’s baby and expresses sincere condolences to the patient and her affected family,” the statement read.

The authority also confirmed that psychosocial support is being provided to Ballentine and her relatives as they cope with the loss.

According to the WRHA, the matter is being treated with urgency, and the hospital has committed to maintaining transparency while safeguarding patient confidentiality.

“The hospital assures the public that the matter is being treated with urgency and remains committed to patient safety and delivering quality care,” the release added, noting that further communication will be made with the family as the review progresses.

The development follows a report published Tuesday by The Gleaner detailing the horrific circumstances surrounding the incident.

That report indicated that Ballentine, who was 38 weeks pregnant and a high risk patient to hospital, on Good Friday went into labour under the care of a nurse.

Complications reportedly arose during delivery, and the baby later died.

The incident has sparked public concern, with calls mounting for accountability and improvements in maternal care within the public health system.

The WRHA says the review will examine the circumstances surrounding the case as part of efforts to determine what transpired and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
