Zone A’s big three secure victory
WESTERN BUREAU:
The three most dominant schools in Zone A of the 2016 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition all logged fine victories yesterday as the zone begins to take shape.
Cornwall College and St James High scored 3-0 and 1-0 victories over Irwin High and Anchovy High, respectively, while Green Pond turned back Maldon, also by a 1-0 margin.
Clarendon College also ticked off another fine performance, stopping Edwin Allen 4-0 to remain in the lead in Group H, as did Glenmuir High, who defeated Porus High 4-0 at the Juici-Patties playing field to take charge in Zone M.
Over in Zone K, Dinthill continued their fine run with an emphatic 6-0 trouncing of Guys Hill to solidify their lead.
However, Cornwall College, minus striker Jourdane Fletcher, who was red-carded for an off-the-ball incident in their first game, were looking to stake a claim for pole position in a zone that is sure to have its own twists and turns.
FANCY PLAY
They started well against Irwin, with Giovanni Reid, Garnett Hudson, Clifton Russell, and Michael Heaven making all the plays, demonstrating a degree of movement off the ball that was pleasing to the eye.
They grabbed the lead in the 34th minute from a free-kick 26 yards out. Heaven unleashed a thunderous 'grass cutter' that left Irwin goalkeeper Ryheem Vassell grasping at air as the ball zipped into the back of the net.
Cornwall had more to give in the second, and they added two more goals to complete the win and send them clear atop Zone A on a maximum six points from two matches, plus a healthy goal difference over St James, who also picked up three points yesterday at Jarrett Park.
Tyreke Clarke netted in the 76th minute against a plucky Anchovy unit as St James kept pace with three more points to also maintain a 100 per cent win record. Green Pond recovered from their drawn first match to claim three vital points to be third in the zone on four points.
