STETHS book Inter-Zone spot
Western Bureau:
St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) qualified for the second round of the ISSA-FLOW daCosta Cup competition with a 1-0 victory over Magotty yesterday at the STETHS Sports Complex.
They continued their strong performance in rural schoolboy football, and Principal Keith Wellington believes their investment in the programme - most recently the installation of floodlights at the sports complex - is key to their successful performances.
"I think you can only do well if you have the requisite resources, as well as the facility that enhances your skill, and we think that if we are going to continue to do well, we need to improve on what we have from year to year. This is just another step in ensuring that what is available to our student-athletes help to enhance their ability to do well," Wellington said.
STETHS' head coach Omar 'Rambo' Wedderburn told The Gleaner in a pregame interview that even though the three points are important, they are focused on getting in good overall team performances going into the next round.
Their defence lead by Clifton Woodbine certainly showed their mettle in the game as they held a one-goal lead from the 27th minute to the end of the game. Damani Henderson scored the lone goal of the contest, outsmarting Maggotty's goalkeeper by heading the ball around him before going on to kick the ball in the empty net.
PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE
Renario Downswell, assistant coach of STETHS said they have been working on the defence going into the next round and expressed he was pleased with their backline's performance.
There were question marks over their offence by fans after a 1-0 win over the team they gave 8-0 in their opening match. Downswell, who is happy for the three points, explained that they didn't start their usual 11 as they wanted to take a look at some of their other players going into the second round.
"The defence is one of the things we are actually working on going into the Inter-Zone because if you don't give up a goal, you stand more [of a] chance of winning," said Downswell "We have to take into consideration the second round coming up, so we wanted to take a look at the players and evaluate them so we just put them out there to give us a good performance and then take it from there.
