Western Bureau:

Carifta Games 1500 metres champion Shaqueena Foote of Petersfield High sent a strong signal to her rivals after breaking her own Class Two 1500 metres record at yesterday's Digicel Western Athletics Championships at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Foote posted 4:47.87 ahead of Shadae Findley of STETHS 5:05.50 and Shanell Whyte of Maggotty High School 5:06.67. The old mark was: 58.49

"It wasn't planned, so I'm feeling very pleased with myself," said Foote. "I knew I would have to set the pace, so I just went out there and did what I had to do."

Foote added that she was looking forward to having a great year both the 800 and 1500 metres. The 800m is her favourite event, and Foote, who placed second at both the Boys and Girls' Championships and Carifta Games in the two-lap race, says that she will be seeking to break the Western Champs record in the event tomorrow.

Shemar Salmon of STETHS (4:02.40) took the Boys' Class One 1500m finals over Rushane Fullerton of Munro College (4:4.20) and Nickoy Harding of STETHS (4:06.84).

The Class Two Boys' 1500m was won by Omar Spencer of Mannings School in 4:23.03, ahead of Tajay Bromwell of STETHS (4.26.63) and Ricardo Thompson of Cornwall College (4.30.16).
