Plummer heads to Europe
Reggae Girl gets loan deal with Swedish club AIK
NATIONAL DEFENDER Konya Plummer will look to continue her development in Europe for the remainder of the season.
Plummer, 24, has secured a three-month loan deal to Swedish club AIK Fotball Damer from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) outfit Orlando Pride.
The Pride announced the deal on their club website yesterday, which takes effect immediately. Plummer will join the team as soon as her work permit is acquired.
Plummer has only made seven total appearances since being drafted by the Pride in January 2020, which included last year’s Fall Series, as well as the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup.
Pride general manager, Ian Flemming, said the deal was done to ensure that Plummer got regular minutes to improve as a player.
“Konya is a unique talent with a lot of potential and consistent playing time is needed for that potential to be realised. We believe this opportunity with AIK will empower her to both show what she has to offer today while growing into the player she has the ability to become,” Flemming told the club’s website. “We look forward to watching her in Sweden over the next three months.”
AIK manager, Anner Mäkinen, said she is looking forward to working with Plummer, who she believes will be able to improve the strength of the team as well as being a positive influence in the locker room.
“Konya is a (player) who is fast and strong in the duel game and has good feet. I am incredibly happy to be able to present Konya who, in addition to her qualities as a player, is a natural leader on and off the pitch,” Mäkinen told the AIK club website.
AIK are currently 11th in the 2021 Swedish Damallsvenskan standings, the top women’s division in the county, with 10 points. That is seven points clear of the relegation place.
The earliest game in which Plummer could make her debut is their Saturday fixture against Djungården.
