Clarendon College’s players celebrate a goal during a 5-0 hammering of Lennon High School in the opening game of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition at the National Stadium yesterday.

THE LENWORTH Hyde-coached Clarendon College (CC), defending champions of the ISSA rural area daCosta Cup, were in sublime form on the opening day of the 2023 schoolboy football season, hammering Group H rivals Lennon High School 5-0 at the National Stadium yesterday.

CC, who had the lion’s share of possession, sent early warning signs, making good on their promises in the sixth minute, courtesy of a penalty, slotted home from the laces of Malachi Douglas. Ten minutes later, Christopher Hull’s left-footed effort sent the boys from Chapelton 2-0 up.

In classic CC fashion, Lennon were staring down the barrel of a 3-0 deficit when Kaheim Dixon slotted home from close range in the 34th minute after a series of one-touch passes scythed open the Lennon defence.

As Lennon heads began to slump, CC pressed home their advantage with sustained pressure, making it 4-0 in the 39th minute through Jahmelle Ashley.

The game was well and truly over by the 42nd minute of the first half, with Douglas’ composed close-range finish.

Already game, set and match, CC visibly took their feet off the gas and Lennon began to come into their own in the second half.

In other games from yesterday’s opening round of the daCosta Cup, Frome beat Merlene Ottey, 3-1, and Rusea’s hammered Cambridge, 6-1.
