Frasziers Whip boss pleased with early statement
COURTNEY DOWDIE, head coach of Frazsiers Whip, said their 7-1 victory over Los Perfectos on the weekend sent a fantastic message about their bid to defend their Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) title.
Coming into the game, both teams had won their opening encounters and were expected to see out a close top-of-the-table clash.
It was a completely different scenario, however, as Frazsiers Whip dominated the proceedings from start to finish.
Dowdie said such a convincing performance against early season rivals was a welcome reaction from his team.
“I’m very pleased,” he told The Gleaner.
“Coming into the game, we knew that we were going to play a Los Perfectos team that has been playing well, so the result shows me that we’re doing well and I can only ask from the girls to give their best every game.”
The defending champions and current league leaders were in a goalscoring mood as Danishca Rattray, Davia Richards and Ricquanna Richards all scored braces with Cassandra Smith adding to the tally with a goal as well.
Dowdie explained he was a bit concerned ahead of the match as he had noticed some nervousness from his players before kick-off.
He had felt it was due to the fact they would be facing off against a high-flying Los Perfectos team, who had entered the fixture with nine goals from two games.
“It is good to see how well we can score. These girls, when we knew that we were going to play Los Perfectos, I saw little jitters because we know that Los Perfectos is a different team this year,” Dowdie said.
“So to know that we could come out here and score seven goals is a big plus and it will do well for their confidence going forward.”
The Frazsiers Whip boss also praised his players for their defensive work as they limited their high-scoring opponents to a single goal.
He made special mention of former under-15 Reggae Girl Jennifer Williams, who made her JWPL debut with a cameo appearance, coming on in the final minutes of the game.
“We were really solid defensively and we adjusted as we went along. At the end, we also brought our young defender on. It was her first Premier League game but we want to integrate her little by little into the team and to get her into the competition.”
Frazsiers Whip remain perfect in the league, standing atop the standings with nine points ahead of second-place Cavalier with seven, while Los Perfectos round off the top three with six.
