Cornwall make six big statements on d’Cup opening day
CORNWALL COLLEGE hit Green Pond High for six to make an emphatic start to their ISSA daCosta Cup campaign yesterday at the Cornwall College playing field.
According to Cornwall’s head coach Hector Wright, while the win was good, there is room for improvement.
“Scoring six goals in your first game is always a plus. The first game of the season is always good to get off the mark. There was a little tension but the guys managed to pull it off,” said Wright.
Wright emphasised the need for better strategic play in future games.
“I think, in the first half, they needed to be a little more patient. Allow the game to come to you, and I think that would have made a difference in the first half,” added Wright.
Cornwall opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Nickane Brown capitalised on an error from Green Pond’s goalkeeper Antwun Findlater.
After multiple attempts and missed opportunities, Cornwall’s Carlondo Morris’ efforts paid off in the 42nd minute before the floodgates opened for him, the striker adding to his tally in the 81st minute and again in time added – his hat-trick well deserved.
Cornwall’s Mekhi Foster added to the tally in the 58th while Miguel Arnold assisted Shevaun Brown in the 70th.
Meanwhile, Green Pond’s head coach, Gregory Daley, said the rough start was attributed to the team’s inadequate preparation.
“It is disappointing, but it was always going to be difficult without some preparation. When our team is unfit, it is always going to be difficult,” said Daley.
“The first goal kind of threw us off but we should have pick ourselves up. I know these boys can play, so we have to go back to the drawing board,” added Daley.
