Urban schoolgirl netball title contenders Gaynstead start fast
FORMER URBAN senior schoolgirl netball champions Gaynstead have sent a strong message to their rivals that they are ready to reclaim their top spot after back-to-back big wins in the ISSA competition.
The Dalton Hinds-coached team, beaten finalists two years ago when they lost to St Catherine High School, blew away St Jago High School 79-9 in their Zone C encounter on Tuesday. This followed their opening win a week earlier when they crushed Tivoli 74-4.
In Tuesday’s match, Gaynstead started quickly, racing to a 24-2 first-quarter lead before stretching it to 44-4 at halftime. They continued to dominate, leading 61-7 after the third quarter, and finished strongly with an 18-2 final-quarter run for a commanding victory.
Coach Dalton Hinds was pleased with his team’s strong start.
“A good start to the season. Our performances have been consistent, and the plan is to focus on one game at a time,” said Hinds.
“The emphasis is on chemistry and executing our structure while giving all 12 players quality time. It’s not about getting big scores, as we know things will get tougher when the second round begins.”
Hinds’ team will be eyeing a chance to end the impressive winning streak of defending champions St Catherine High, who have taken the title three years in a row.
It was double success on the day for Gaynstead, as their junior team also brushed aside St Jago 32-10.
Meanwhile, defending Junior and All-Island champions Wolmer’s Girls’ got off to a solid start with an easy 42-4 win over Greater Portmore.
