St Jago girls dominate Wesley Powell Memorial
St Jago High School’s girls were in dominant form at last Saturday’s 22nd staging of the Wesley Powell Benjamin Memorial track and field meet, held at Excelsior High School.
The over-distance meet, where coaches gauge their athletes’ performances heading into the Christmas break, saw Class 2 athlete Adora Campbell leading the way for St Jago with double wins on the day. Campbell clocked 18.82 seconds to top the Class 2 girls’ 150 metres and was also best in the Class 2 300 metres, stopping the clock at 42.93 seconds.
It was a clean sweep of the top three spots for St Jago in the 300 metres, as Martina Parkes (43.25) and Alyssa Carty (44.11) finished second and third, respectively. In the 150 metres, Parkes was also second in 19.29 seconds, with Keelan Smith of Holy Childhood High third in 20.04.
Jamila Alves was first overall for St Jago in the Class 3 300 metres, while in the Class 4 300 metres it was a 1-2 finish for the team as Dayanna Foster won in 45.80 seconds, with teammate Chantae Morgan second in 45.81. Excelsior High’s Brianna Grey was third in 45.88.
St Jago girls also had success in the Class 1 1000 metres, with Kedera Coombs finishing first in 3:29.34, ahead of teammate Tashalee Palmer in second, clocking 3:24.01. Excelsior High’s Angel Stephenson placed third in 3:27.70.
Home team Excelsior High were also among the winners. Khalia Raymond won the Class 3 150 metres in 19.67 seconds, ahead of teammate Jada Ditt, who was second in 19.76, with Shenelle Whyte of Titchfield High third in 19.77.
It was also a quinella for Excelsior in the Class 1 300 metres as Breanna Brown won in 41.86 seconds, ahead of teammate Amoi Kentish in second with 42.56. Third went to Dawaynea Lewis of Merl Grove in 43.29.
Among the boys, Wolmer’s Boys’ shone brightly with podium finishes in the Class 3 300 metres. Joshua McWilliams was first in 38.86 seconds, ahead of teammates Donovan James in second with 39.01, and Kaden Levermore, third in 39.43.
It was a quinella in the Class 2 300 metres for the Heroes Circle-based team, with Deandre Myers on top in 37.45 seconds, ahead of Antonio McGregor in second with 37.91. Third place went to Kemarrio McLennan of Cornwall College in 38.77.
Myers was also second overall in the Class 2 150 metres, clocking 17.63 seconds behind winner Ricky Ball of Rhymers Track Club, who posted 17.54. Third went to Zaundre Myers of Wolmer’s in 18.00.
Donovan James was also a winner for Wolmer’s in the Class 3 600 metres. He won in 1:49.16, ahead of Kingston College’s Leonardo Coley in second with 1:39.33, and Amer Tucker of St Andrew Technical High third in 1:41.03.
Excelsior High’s Malike Nugent stood out in the Class 1 150 metres, stopping the clock at 16.83 ahead of teammates Michael Graham in second with 17.33 and James Harrison third in 17.39.
