Frome Technical High remained unbeaten in the ISSA daCosta Cup after edging former champions Munro College 1-0 at Frome Field yesterday.

In the rescheduled fixture, Frome’s Tavar Cox scored the winner in the 85th minute from a corner kick to strengthen his team’s chances of advancing to the round of 16.

The loss was Munro’s first of the daCosta Cup season.

The victory lifted Frome to the top of Group A on nine points, while St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro are tied on six points. STETHS hold the advantage on goal difference.

Frome coach Cleighton Stephens said his team played well, moved the ball effectively, and created numerous scoring opportunities.

“We remain unbeaten in the daCosta Cup, and it’s a good feeling. It’s kind of a revenge game because they trashed us the last time we met. Today’s game was really important. The boys played hard, were eager to go out there, and created a lot of chances,” said Stephens.

The teams last met in the Ben Francis Cup knockout competition, where Munro eliminated Frome with a 5-0 victory on their home turf.

“The game today was pretty nice, and I am really proud. Whatever the result, I don’t think I would have been disappointed because of how the guys played,” he added.

Munro coach Everdean Scarlett conceded that the better team prevailed.

“It was a tough game in tough conditions. We just couldn’t play our game because of the waterlogged field, and it was just not our game today. I think the team that wanted it the most won today,” said Scarlett.

“I thought we were complacent, knowing the fact that we beat them 5-0, and we just didn’t turn up to play,” he added.

In another rescheduled encounter, Group F heavyweights Cornwall College rebounded from a 2-1 loss to William Knibb Memorial with a crucial 3-1 victory over Brown’s Town High.

Cornwall’s goals came from Carlondo Morris, Mekhi Foster, and Shakeem Gibson, while Ornardo Flowers netted Brown’s Town’s lone goal.

The result leaves Manning’s School atop the group on nine points, with Rusea’s High and Cornwall tied on six points.

The second round resumes on Saturday with 17 games scheduled.
