Frome Technical High School stunned defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 4-2 yesterday to secure their place in the next round of the ISSA daCosta Cup and leave the title holders on the brink of elimination at the STETHS Sports Complex.

Unbeaten Frome join Lacovia High, McGrath High, Manning’s School and Clarendon College in the next round of the competition.

Frome’s goals came from Tariq Maxwell, Antwayne Campbell, Marquez Dunn and Raheem Dennison, while Dantay Hewitt scored both goals for STETHS.

Frome lead Group A with 12 points, while Munro College climbed to second on nine. STETHS and Irwin High are tied on six points, with Irwin holding the advantage on goal difference.

Rajon McKenzie scored the lone goal as Manning’s School secured qualification with a 1-0 victory over former champions Cornwall College at Cornwall.

The win also extended Manning’s unbeaten run this season.

McKenzie struck in the 45th minute, capitalising on a defensive error by Cornwall to fire home the winner.

Manning’s coach Patrick Graham said playing against Cornwall presented a challenge that motivated his team.

“We know that it wouldn’t be easy coming here to play against a Cornwall team. We know that they are looking for points, so we know that the challenge was an uphill challenge,” said Graham.

“Qualifying is one step closer to our dream. We have to revel in the moment, being that we would have come here and achieved something significant,” added Graham.

Meanwhile, Cornwall coach Leacroft Lettman said his team made a costly mistake after a positive start.

“I think one mistake cost us in the latter part of the first half. We created some chances but weren’t able to convert,” said Lettman.

“From start, I was saying that we need to get that finishing touch in the game, and hence this is what happened when we are not putting away our chances,” added Lettman.

Cornwall pressed hard for an equaliser on several occasions, but Manning’s disciplined defending ensured they held on for all three points.

Manning’s lead Group F on 12 points, while Rusea’s High and Cornwall are both on six points. Rusea’s hold the edge on goal difference.

Cornwall will now await the result of the Rusea’s High versus Brown’s Town High encounter to determine their standing in the competition.

Three matches were rescheduled because of inclement weather and will be played on Monday.

The postponed games are Ocho Rios versus Morant Bay, Brown’s Town versus Rusea’s High, and Central High versus Yallahs High.
