Hugh Reid has been appointed general manager of Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance Company (SJLIC), filling a vacancy created last October by the promotion of Jacqueline Sharp to chief financial officer of the Scotia Group.

His appointment took effect May 3.

Reid was recruited from Victoria Mutual Building Society where he was chief of operations.

But his background also straddles finance and insurance, including a seven-year run at the National Housing Trust as senior director of finance and operations.

He held executive-level positions in the insurance industry at Prime Life Assurance Company, Global Life Assurance Company, and Sagicor Life Jamaica when it was still known as Life of Jamaica.

He has a history with SJLIC as a former board member.

Scotia Group, which announced the appointment Thursday - though the release was dated February 4 - said Reid was tasked with developing and expanding the insurance franchise with the aim of increasing the overall profit contribution of wealth management and insurance to the group.

Reid said in the statement that he was "quite excited about the challenge of leading Scotia Insurance, taking market share, and leveraging the company's strength in order to make SJLIC the premier life insurance company in the region."
