WESTERN BUREAU:
The two contestants in the mid-season final of the 2011-12 Captain's Bakery & Grill Western Super Football League will be known tomorrow afternoon when the curtain comes down on the first round of the 12-team competition, which is divided into two zones.
In Zone One, where only a point separates the top three teams, Catherine Hall (16), Wadadah (15) and Granville (15) all have a live shot at topping the group and sealing the lone slot in the mid-season final.
In Zone Two, leaders Savannah (18) look a safe bet to advance as they will be taking a three-point lead into their top-of-the-table clash against second-place Tomorrow's People. In fact, based on their impressive goal difference, they could still lose and advance as long as they don't suffer a heavy defeat.
"We are expecting keen action, especially among the teams with a chance to make the mid-season final," said Marline Brown, the competition's coordinator.
"Savannah is the only team among the main contenders who should feel any degree of comfort going into their game."
Making an exception
The full fixture for tomorrow's round of matches reads as follows: Zone One - Catherine Hall at home to Jericho Rangers, Granville away to Frome, and Invaders at home to Wadadah.
In Zone Two - Fogo United at home to Harmony, Bamboo away to Montpelier, and Tomorrow's People at home to Savannah. All six games are slated for a 3 o'clock start.
"Normally, we would not play a game in the parish when Village United have a home game in the Red Stripe Premier League," said Brown. "However, we are making an exception this weekend as we want all the games to be played at the same time."
The full point standings read as follows:
Zone One - Catherine Hall 16, Wadadah 15, Granville 15, Jericho Rangers 10, Frome nine, and Invaders six.
Zone Two - Savannah 18, Tomorrow's People 15, Bamboo 14, Harmony 14, Fogo United 13, and Montpelier three.
In last weekend's round of matches, Savannah consolidated their place atop the Zone Two standings when a Kendrick Quarrie strike gave them a 1-0 away win against Fogo. In Zone One, Catherine Hall surged to the top of the standings when a superb strike by skipper Omar Christie gave them a 1-0 win against Granville.
In other games, Jericho Rangers had arguably their best result of the season when goals by Davian Seaton (three), Ricardo Allen (two) and Evol Headley gave them a big 6-3 win against Invaders. Harmony, behind goals from Kanardo Wilson and Dean-Lloyd Reid, clipped Montpelier 2-1; Tomorrow's People, with goals from Gregory Tape and Ricardo Scott, blanked Bamboo 2-0.
