WESTERN BUREAU:Scotiabank has announced the award of 50 bursaries to students as a part of the bank's thrust in education. The bursaries form part of Scotiabank's initiatives for Jamaica's 50th Independence anniversary.
During a press conference hosted at its Sam Sharpe Square branch in Montego Bay, Scotiabank's Michael Shaw said the awarding of bursaries is a demonstration of the institution's pledge to ensure students get to the next level.
"Traditionally, Scotiabank is very big on education, and it is very important that we support our students. We decided that as part of the Jamaica 50 celebrations, we'd award scholarships to students across the island," said Shaw, who is the district vice-president with responsibility for the Metro North area.
Seven students from western Jamaica will receive bursaries ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 each. They are Shameika Dixon, Abigail Allen, Delmar McDonald, Nicolette Wilson, Nicola Noble, Daniella Hutchinson, and Jerome Johnson.
"[As part of] our commitment to philanthropy, we continue to make these donations year after year. This year was special, and we expanded the programme to 50 students and J$3 million," added Shaw.
"The bursaries form a major part of our donation because we want to see the students through making sure all the facilities they need to complete their education are available."
GRATEFUL FOR ASSISTANCE
Recipient Abigail Allen said she was grateful for the scholarship.
"I attend the Montego Bay Community College and I recently finished my first year with a 4.0 GPA, but heading into the second year, finances were a challenge, and so I applied to the Scotia Foundation for assistance."
She said that there are many youth who want to achieve, and once given the necessary assistance to get to the next level, they will get over the hurdles.
