WESTERN BUREAU:Twenty-year-old André Coleman is keen on making an impact as the medical sciences faculty's representative for the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona-Western Jamaica Campus, Montego Bay.

"Being a student leader is a wonderful opportunity," said Coleman. "You get to meet persons and also build yourself as a more competent leader. One shouldn't take on the role just for popularity or benefits; instead, do so because you have a passion and a drive to do it."

As the medical sciences faculty representative, Coleman is the bridge of communication between the students within the faculty, campus committee and the administration on campus.

"The post has assisted me in my time management and to be more involved with campus activities," said Coleman. "With my regular class meetings and faculty meetings, it can be hectic, but it is all for a good cause and I am enjoying every moment of being here and being able to do what I do."

TEST OF HUMILITY

Coleman said the experience is a test of his humility.

"I felt pretty honoured and a little surprised that the students in the faculty thought I was suitable to be their representative," said Coleman. "For me, it was less of an election and more of a unanimous decision. I felt humbled by their trust in my ability to lead effectively" he said with a smile.

According to Coleman, it was a breast-cancer seminar that he and his team organised last semester that helped him to realise how college students can help to make a difference in their communities.

"I believe that, as students, we sometimes overlook the impact we can make in society. But I want to use my post to promote healthy lifestyle in our environment," noted Coleman. "We have a responsibility to impact change."
