Ahh … Ras Natango: MoBay's oasis

Western Bureau:Ahhh … Ras Natango Gallery and Garden, located in the quiet district of Camrose, St. James, is arguably one of the parish's best kept secret as it is a fabulous place to hang out for complete relaxation with family and friends for a day or even a few hours.
While the 20-minute trek from downtown Montego Bay can be sometimes tedious as one travels through communities like Tucker and Retirement, the end result is guaranteed to be pleasing, especially the stunning view looking back at the western city and sections of Trelawny.
In addition to the botanical appeal of Ahhh … Ras Natango, its collection of art, the handiwork of co-owner Ian Williams (popularly known as Ras Natango), has made the location a sanctuary for return visitors. In fact, the general feeling is that, once you go, there is always a reason to return.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
The gallery's concept began when Natango decided to have a permanent hub to showcase his collection of paintings. He and his wife, Tamika, purchased the property, which has now evolved into a botanical garden and sanctuary for 18 of Jamaica's indigenous birds.
"Several international visitors have come to our property, but we want locals to have the Ras Natango Gallery and Garden experience too," said Mrs Williams. "It is somewhere different … a place where your mind can relax and just meditate, inhale the fresh air, and just be at one with nature and its surroundings."
She added that Ahhh … Ras Natango Gallery and Garden is an excellent location for field trips for schools as students can have an innovative learning experience using nature and art.
"This is for all of us and the Camrose community has embraced the concept, which has made it so successful for so many years," noted Williams. "Come and learn about art, culture and interact with nature through the birds that come by for feeding."
