Negril gets a taste of African wisdom
Western Bureau:Negril recently got a taste of authentic ancient African wisdom and practices when Dr Malidoma Patrice-Some, an author and teacher from a village in Burkina Faso, West Africa, shared his knowledge at a two-day symposium at Jackie's on the Reef Spa in West End.
The ancient wisdom and practices, which the African doctor wants to share with the Western world, have formed an integral part of the life of the people of Burkina Faso for thousands of years.
Patrice-Some, who had previously visited Jackie's on the Reef Spa, was returning by popular demand.
"It is possible that we have been brought together at this time because we have profound truths to teach each other," he said. "Toward that end, I offer the wisdom of the African ancestors so that Westerners might find the deep healing they seek."
ANCESTRAL FLAME BURNING
According to the African doctor, the spark of this ancestral flame, which he has brought to the 'land of the stranger' (countries outside of Africa), are now burning brightly.
"Increasingly, I have been, and will be, encouraging Westerners to embody these traditions as a testimony to the indigenous capacity to assert itself with dignity in the face of modernity," the doctor said. "In this way, the ancestors will know that this medicine has found a true home - that it is more than an honoured guest."
In explaining the state of world affairs, Patrice-Some said that at this critical time in history, people are awakening to a deep need for global healing. According to him, African wisdom, so long held secret, is being called on to provide tools to enable people to live more peacefully.
"The indigenous spirit in each of us is calling for cleansing and reconciliation … . The ancestors are responding," he said.
Patrice-Some has written several books, including Ritual, Of Water and the Spirit, and Healing Wisdom of Africa.
