Shane Grant - mixing fun with education

Western Bureau:Balancing studies with playing games is part of campus life, and 22-year-old Shane Grant, a student at the University of the West Indies, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus, is encouraging others to join in.
Grant, a final-year student who is majoring in management studies (accounting), is the games committee chairman at the Montego Bay-based campus.
"We are responsible for organising sporting events on and off campus … from sourcing venues for our events to ensuring that we have coaches and training schedules and even rallying supporters for the teams," said Grant. "It's a serious task, so I can't slack off as it relates to getting the job done.
"In addition, my co-chairman Ashley Anguin and I promote and organise these events and coordinate the training of the various sports teams, ensure the teams have equipment, organise training schedules," added Grant. "We also organise games days, where we play board games and basically ensure the students have fun on campus."
BETTERING HIMSELF
Grant said being able to interact with different personalities, coupled with the field experience from making sports budgets, helps to make him a better student in his areas of study.
Encouraging a healthy lifestyle among students is something Grant continues to do, and since he has been in office, he has had a gym outsourced, and students get a substantial discount. The effort seems to be working as many students are taking advantage of it.
