The Police High Command is reporting that 137 persons were murdered last month.

The figure represents an 8 percent reduction, when compared with the 149 persons murdered in January last year.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Crime, Mark Shields said while the figures are encouraging there is still cause for concern.

DCP Shields said the joint police/military task force has been reaping success in its operations. However, he is concern about the number of gang related murders in Jamaica

73 persons were reportedly killed in gang related violence last month.

11 women and five children are among the 137 persons who were reported murdered last month.
