Jamaica’s best placed athlete
Sherone Simpson, the fastest woman in 2006, was Jamaica’s best-placed athlete at yesterday’s Nike Prefontaine Track and Field Classic held in Eugene, Oregon.
Simpson clocked 10.99 to finish second in the women’s 100 metres. American Tori Edwards won the event in 10.94. Jamaican Kerron Stewart was third, also in 10.99. Peta-Gaye Dowdie of Jamaica was seventh in 11.31.
In the women’s 400 metres, Jamaican had to settle for third and fourth. Shericka Williams clocked 50.34 for third, while Novlene Williams finished fourth in 50.92.
American Sanya Richards won the event in 50.10 seconds.
There was another third place finish for Jamaica on the day.
Lacena Golding Clarke clocked personal-best 12.65 for third in the women’s 100 metre hurdles, while her teammate Brigitte Foster Hylton was fifth in 12.75.
American Joanna Hayes won in 12.53.
Among the men, Jamaican Christopher Williams clocked a season-best 20.74 for sixth in the 200 metres won by American Wallace Spearmon in a meet record 20.14.
The 2005 World Championships silver medallist, Jamaican Michael Frater was sixth in the men’s 100 metres in 10.24. Darrel Brown of Trinidad and Tobago won in 10.07.
