Seventeen stranded on Pedro Cays



Seventeen fisher folk are stranded on the Pedro cays.

It’s understood that this comprises 15 men and two women.

Dean 90 miles away



The Meteorological Services of Jamaica is reporting that Hurricane Dean is now located 90 miles south east of Morant Point.

Duty Forecaster at the Met Office Viola Jones says the system remains a powerful category 4 system:

She says while the system is predicted to move south of the island, hurricane force winds are expected over southern parts with tropical force winds over the rest of the island.





PM assures security in place



Prime Minister Portia Simpson has sought to assure that adequate security arrangements are in place to deal with incidents of looting and any other criminal activity.

The Prime Minister warned Jamaicans to take the Hurricane seriously is urged people living in low lying and flood prone areas to move to higher ground.

Services to be cut - NWC and JPS



Meanwhile the National Water Commission (NWC) is advising persons to conserve water ahead of gradual water lock-offs.

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is advising customers that light will be disconnected sometime this afternoon before the Hurricane reaches Jamaica.





Mexico on Hurricane Watch



A Hurricane Watch has been issued for Mexico.

This means hurricane conditions are possible within the watch within 36 hours.

In Cuba a tropical storm watch has been issued for the provinces of Pinar del Rio and La Habana.
