Mazda has been systematically expanding its vehicle chassis architecture to accommodate a broader range of models, including the CX-30, CX-50, and the subject of this review, the CX-60. This strategic move allows for greater versatility in design and engineering, catering to diverse market segments. The CX-60, in particular, draws inspiration from Mazda’s evolving design philosophy, which seeks to combine elegant aesthetics with practical functionality, creating a vehicle that is both visually appealing and highly capable.

Exterior Design

The exterior of the CX-60 presents a sophisticated and purposeful stance. The front fascia is characterised by a prominent grille and sleek, angular headlights that integrate seamlessly into the overall design. The broader wheelbase contributes to the perception of larger body panels, lending the vehicle a commanding presence. The rear of the CX-60 features a clean and refined design, with distinctive tail light clusters that complement the front-end styling. Other distinguishing elements include well-defined character lines along the side profiles, which contribute to a sense of motion even when stationary.

In comparison to other vehicles in its category, such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q5, the CX-60 offers a unique interpretation of the premium SUV. While its European counterparts often lean towards more aggressive or overtly luxurious aesthetics, the CX-60 maintains a balance of understated elegance and functional design, appealing to those who appreciate a more measured approach to automotive styling.

Interior Refinement

Mazda has consistently demonstrated a commitment to interior design, often setting a benchmark among Japanese manufacturers. The CX-60’s cabin exemplifies this, creating an experience that prioritises both comfort and user-friendliness. The overwhelming majority of surfaces feature soft-touch materials, contributing to a premium feel throughout. Practical considerations are evident with the inclusion of USB ports conveniently located within the armrest compartment.

Occupants benefit from comfortable leather sport seats designed for both support and long-distance comfort. The dual-control air-conditioning system allows for individual climate preferences, enhancing passenger comfort. Safety is addressed with the provision of dual airbags and side curtains. Infotainment needs are met with an AM/FM radio and four USB ports for connectivity. The optional Bose audio package delivers a well-tuned sound experience, adding to the enjoyment of journeys. A wireless charging pad with a signal light for status indication adds a touch of modern convenience, and a spacious sunroof enhances the sense of openness within the cabin. The central 12.5-inch screen serves as the hub for infotainment and vehicle settings, while seat memory functions allow for personalised driver and passenger settings.

Driving Experience: Unearthing its Versatility

This was, without question, the most surprising and revealing element of my time with the CX-60. To truly put it through its paces, I ventured off the typical tarmac and headed into the demanding hills of St Andrew, making my way towards Guava Ridge. The roads quickly deteriorated into unpaved, uneven tracks, and I even got lost on a few occasions, finding myself on some steep, unmade gradients.

This is where the 2.5-litre engine and the all-wheel drive system truly shone. Despite the challenging conditions, the CX-60 handled them admirably. The all-wheel drive system proved its worth on numerous occasions, providing unwavering grip on loose surfaces. In several instances, the traction-control system subtly intervened, ensuring that the vehicle maintained its composure and preventing any unwanted slippage even on slippery ascents. The vehicle’s ride height, while not extreme, was perfectly adequate for navigating the ruts and uneven terrain without any major concerns about scraping the undercarriage.

The 2.5-litre engine, while not a powerhouse in terms of outright acceleration, demonstrated remarkable versatility. Its power delivery was smooth and consistent, providing sufficient torque to conquer the steep climbs without feeling strained. It is clear that Mazda has engineered this powertrain with a balance of efficiency and usable power for varied conditions, not just open motorways. The suspension, which felt composed on smoother roads, absorbed the imperfections of the off-road trails surprisingly well, isolating the cabin from most of the jolts and vibrations. This adaptability truly highlights the CX-60’s dual personality – a comfortable cruiser for daily commutes and a capable adventurer when the path diverges.

The 2025 Mazda CX-60 2.5 Litre AWD presents a compelling package for those seeking a premium mid-size SUV that doesn’t just excel on paper but also genuinely impresses in real-world driving conditions, particularly when those conditions become less than ideal. Its elegant design, well-appointed interior, and surprisingly capable driving dynamics make it a serious contender in a crowded segment.
