Japan’s early foray into opening borders makes stop in Jamaica

Japan, like China, for long swathes of history, has trended towards encircling itself with its culture and seeing foreign relationships as something to fear. That trend changed after seven years of occupation following World War II. Today, Japan is one of the most populous countries in the world and its exports in technology are incalculable. Interestingly, Jamaica played its role in that global shift, accepting a Japanese ambassador all the way back in 1964. The Gleaner helps us relive the moment.

Japan’s first Ambassador presents credentials

Mr Takeo Ozawa, the first Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica, presented his letters of Credence on the morning of June 30, 1964, to His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Clifford Campbell, at King’s House.

In presenting the credentials Mr Ozawa said: “It is a great honour and privilege for me to be received by Your Excellency and present my letters of Credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Jamaica”.

New road

“I am particularly happy to be appointed as the first Ambassador to Jamaica in accordance with the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries on March 17, 1964, and especially at this time when Jamaica is marching vigorously forward on a new road of development since the gaining of independence”.

“Being aware of my responsibility, I am determined to do my utmost for the fulfilment of my duty to strengthen the bonds of friendship and the most cordial relationship between Jamaica and Japan, and I trust that Your Excellency’s Government and the people will be good enough to extend their cooperation to me. In closing, I would like to convey to Your Excellency and your people the cordial feeling of friendship from the Government and people of Japan and their sincere wishes for the prosperity, excellency and the people of Jamaica”.

Warm welcome

In replying the Governor-General said: “It is with great pleasure that I accept your letters of Credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Jamaica. The Government and people of Jamaica share the wish of the government and people of Japan that friendship and cordial relationship will develop between our two countries. Allow us to extend to you a warm welcome on the first Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica and to express the wish that your tour of duty will be both happy and constructive”.
