Those sweet juices and bullas!

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Please allow me to insert a little of my sweet bit into the bulla and bag juice matter in schools. Information gleaned from the Jamaica Information Service, coming out of the Ministry of Education, indicates that Minister of Education Ruel Reid has indicated that bullas and bag juices will not be allowed into our schools.

His research has shown that these have direct impact on students' hyperactivity and their learning, and a better and healthier alternative is being explored. While I do not favour the raw bulla and bag juice in hand, I would love that a greater examination be done of those sweet buns, cakes and well-boxed carbonated juices coming from our more prominent manufacturers.

SHORT- TO LONG-TERM CONSUMPTION

The studies also reveal that the short- to long-term consumption of these juices/drinks can lead to urinary tract infection, and calcium depletion. By extension, who would want the excessive calories in his or her body?

I also note that probably because of the low sales and consumption of these juices, heavy advertisement and competitions are being undertaken, and some of our school leaders are deceived into entering these competitions.

I am, therefore, recommending that fairness, justice and equity be evidenced in our dealing with our various consumers and manufacturers. I will further recommend that whatever standards are set for the small businessman, the same apply to the prominent manufacturer.
