Top tips for floral newbies
Three ways to extend the lifespan of your bouquets
It is a well known fact that the best way to liven up a room is to introduce plants. As home décor enthusiast know very well, this can mean either live plants or fresh flowers. For the uninitiated who would love to start adding those gorgeous arrangements to their living spaces, here are three tips from KW Bloom Box, a local gift store that specialises in floral arrangements.
According to the KW Bloom Box team, in order to get an extended lifespan out of your bouquets, you must:
1. Change the water every two days.
Once you have placed your flowers in a vase of your liking, adding water is a must. This water should be changed every two days to minimise the risk of bacteria build-up and debris in the water.
KW Bloom Box boss Kerry-Ann Aiken says “changing out the water will ensure that the flowers are taking in clean, fresh water”.
2. Trim the stems.
Often we are bombarded with the image of glamorous women in white linen outfits (think Diane Keaton in S omething’s Gotta Give) pruning their flowers in their pristine kitchens. This is not just a movie trope. To reduce user error, Aiken says “cut stems at a 45 degree angle. The stems will take in water better this way”.
3. Give them a cool home.
While living through this ongoing heatwave it is very difficult to maintain low temperatures, but this is a necessity for the longevity of flowers. “Keep florals in a cool place away from direct sunlight,” Aiken says. This will prevent them from drying out.
Now with these top tips from KW Bloom Box, go forth and fill your homes with nature’s greatest accessory.
