The Jamaica College Trust recently announced the appointment of Lance Hylton to the position of chairman of the Board of Management of Jamaica College (JC) effective January 1, 2024.

Hylton comes to the position having served as Vice Chairman of the Board during the tenures of the late R Danny Williams and of the immediate Past Chairman Michael Bernard, who retired on December 31, 2023 after 12 years at the helm.

He has also served the school as a founding trustee of the Jamaica College Foundation, and as chairman of the Board’s Personnel Committee which adjudicates disciplinary complaints involving students and teachers. He was honoured by the school in 2010 for his work on the committee and its role in the rejuvenation of the school.

Hylton is a respected attorney-at-law and has contributed his legal services to the school since being called to the bar in 1987.

Lance is a proud past student of Jamaica College, and while there served as captain of both the table tennis and Schools’ Challenge teams, and was also a member of the chess team, prefect body and various other clubs and organisations. In his final year he was awarded the Ewart Robertson Trophy for being the outstanding all-round sixth-former.

Hylton has also served in many public sector leadership roles, including as chairman of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica, chairman of the Companies Office Advisory Board, and was a member of Jamaica’s Industry Advisory Council on International Business Services. He has also served on the boards of public listed private sector companies including Berger Paints, Pegasus and Supreme Ventures Limited.

His longstanding involvement in civic, educational and charitable organisations also includes being a tutor of the Norman Manley Law School since 2009 and a Rotarian since 1997, serving as Rotary Club President 2000-2001.

The new JC board chairman is married to attorney-at-law Judy Hylton and they have three children.

In accepting the appointment with “deep humility”, he acknowledged the daunting task of following in the footsteps of his predecessors, but promised to dedicate himself to maintaining the great traditions, reputation and track record of Jamaica College.

The new board is being empanelled and will be announced at a later date.
