Boyz on a cruise in Bermuda
Lowe, Cephas, Palmer, Nicholson score in 4-0 win
Jamaica cruised to a 4-0 win over Bermuda at the Bermuda National Stadium last night to kick-start their Concacaf World Cup final-round qualifiers with three points.
Goals from captain Damion Lowe (6th), Renaldo Cephas (26th), Kasey Palmer (58th) and Shamar Nicholson saw the Reggae Boyz to a comfortable win over the home team.
Debutant Bailey Cadamarteri had the first chance of the game for Jamaica, when he broke in behind down the right, but could not beat goalkeeper Dale Eve from a tight angle.
However, from the resulting corner, the Bermuda defence struggled to clear and the ball fell to Lowe, who toe-poked through a crowd of players to find the net.
Six minutes later, Cadamarteri found Kasey Palmer unmarked at the far post but he could not put the ball under control, and lost possession to Eve.
Bermuda had their first real chance after 16 minutes when Nahki Wells fired a shot from the edge of the box and the ball was spilled by Jahmali Waite in goal. However, an alert Greg Leigh cleared the danger from an onrushing attacker.
Cephas increased the Reggae Boyz lead in the 26th minute, taking the ball from the halfway line then easing his way past two defenders before slamming the ball past Eve and a host of defenders.
The second goal knocked much of the wind out of the hosts and the Jamaicans had more possession and more opportunities to go forward, and Cadamarteri came inches from a third after taking a pass over the top from Dexter Lembikisa and rounding goalkeeper Eve, but put his effort just wide of the far post.
Bermuda had a glorious chance to get one back five minutes before the break, but Wells failed to control properly after he was put through on goal, and the ball went out behind.
Cadamarteri then had another close effort minutes later, after cutting inside his marker from the left and firing a shot off the near post.
Straight from the second half kick-off, Willie Clemons had a great chance for Bermuda but fired wide from eight yards.
Kane Crichlow then had three good chances in four minutes, first firing a shot from the edge of the box straight to Waite in the 52nd minute.
Moments later, he broke inside the box and cut inside a defender, but Richard King, who had an outstanding game in defence, blocked his goalbound shot with an outstretched boot.
A minute later, he broke away inside the box but fired wide of the target.
Jamaica got their third from another piece of individual brilliance, this time from Palmer, who drove through midfield and drilled a low shot past Eve from just outside the box.
Cadamarteri wasted another good chance in the 63rd minute when Lembikisa headed a cross back across the goal, but he was indecisive from six yards out.
The visitors then kept their opponents under wraps for the most part, despite a spirited effort of the home team, and added a fourth through striker Shamar Nicholson, who headed in a Ronaldo Webster corner in the 90th minute.
