It’s Mouttet Mile day: SVREL boss ‘nervous, excited’
Chairman of Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), Solomon Sharpe, says he is feeling both “nervous and excited” as Caymanas Park prepares to stage today’s fourth running of the ultra-rich Mouttet Mile, which offers a record purse of $45 million.
The event, the richest race in the English-speaking Caribbean, has again attracted several high-quality United States-bred horses.
In total, more than $70 million in purse money will be on offer today, with 160 horses expected to compete across the card. The programme also features the co-feature event, the Bruceontheloose Trophy, which carries a purse of $18 million.
“I am feeling nervous, I am feeling excited. The whole Mouttet Mile 2025 has brought a different level of butterflies that has never been felt before,” said Sharpe. “When you sit down and you set a plan, and you know that conversations that we have had four, five years ago about the whole plan and vision and to see the vision coming to light is an awesome feeling,” he said.
Sharpe noted that seeing major international partners involved has heightened the occasion.
“To see NYRA (New York Racing Association) Betting on board, to see Fox Sports on board and to see all the support that we have been getting from the various media houses, this is a real shot in the arm for Caymanas Park and the entire racing industry in Jamaica and we are super excited about that,” he said.
Competitive fields
Sharpe highlighted that today’s 11-race card (first post 10:10 a.m.) promises non-stop entertainment, with competitive fields throughout.
“It will be 11 exciting races and there will be end-to-end action on Saturday at Caymanas Park because when you have a day like this and you have field sizes exceeding 12 horses, you are really excited and you can’t ask for much more,” he said.
“This is just really exciting, the punters are charged and all the staff are charged because they have done a wonderful job in getting the place ready for this massive event. This is a massive festival of racing and we just continue working to put all the different steps for it to get bigger and better,” Sharpe noted.
A number of international riders will be on show, with jockeys from across the region and North America slated to participate in the races at Caymanas Park today.
“We have Brian Boodramsingh, who is based in Trinidad and Tobago, we have our Jamaican jockey Dane Nelson won is based in Canada and we have Javier Castellano and Emisael Jaramillo who are both based in the United States and so all the jockeys are excited and they are all looking forward to a very thrilling day of racing at Caymanas Park,” Sharpe said.
Post time for the Bruceontheloose Trophy is 3:55 p.m. and the Mouttet Mile is set to go off at 4:50 p.m.
Trainer Andrew Nunes and champion jockey Raddesh Roman are favoured to win the 10th and 11th, two of the richest races on the card.
Roman rides OF A REVOLUTION for Nunes in the 10th and NAUTICAL STAR for the same trainer in the Mouttet Mile.
