Miami-based shipping company, Seafreight Agencies, with local offices in Kingston, has leased Port Everglades terminal space in Florida.

Seafreight was awarded the contract by the Broward County Commission for a 10-year period. SeaFreight will be the Florida port's first tenant to start operations on the new container yard as soon as it is complete.

More capacity

The company's operations will be located on the Southport, occupying 25-acres of the 41-acre project. The new cargo yard has been under construction since April, 2009. The entire project is expected to create 15 per cent more capacity for containerised cargo at the port.

Seafreight operates eight container ships at Port Everglades with twice-weekly, fixed-day sailings to and from the Caribbean region, a key market for the port.

The guaranteed value of the agreement with SeaFreight to Port Everglades, including rent, over the lease period, will increase from $2.4 million to $4.1 million annually. According to the port authority, volume guarantees are expected to grow 23 per cent higher than current cargo levels within the first six years.
