Jamaican world record holder Asafa Powell made a positive start to his Olympic season last night with an easy win in the 100 metres at the Melbourne Grand Prix.

Powell overcame a cut knee that curtailed his training over the past two weeks, finished in 10.4 seconds at Olympic Park, well outside his world mark of 9.74.

He finished two metres ahead of his Jamaican compatriot Michael Frater, who finished in 10.25. Former Australian record holder, Matt Shirvington was third in a time of 10.35.

Jamaican Winston Smith finished seventh in the men’s 200 metres 21.71, won by Australian Daniel Batman with 20.84.

Gregory Little of Jamaica was seventh in the men’s 400 hurdles with 53.15.

Melanie Walker finished second in the women’s 200 metres in 23.80, while New Zealander Monique Williams won the race in 23.75 seconds.

Sherone Simpson was second in the women’s 400 metres in 51.74 seconds behind Australian Tamsyn Lewis, who won in 51.55. Jamaica’s Nadia Cunningham was seventh.
