A former Guyanese army official, Oliver Hinckson has been brought before the court on sedition and terrorism charges.

The charges come more than a month after he criticised the government’s social and economic policies and offered to help with mediation with heavily armed gang members.

The British trained ex- solider, who was refused bail, is accused of uttering a seditious speech aimed at bringing into hatred or contempt President Bharrat Jagdeo and to promote public disorder.

The government blamed the gang for the killing of at least 11 persons in their homes at Lusignan village in January.

Authorities also believe the gang was responsible for killing 12 people in the gold mining town of Bartica in early February.
