Members of the governing United Democratic Party (UDP) in Belize have voted to expel embattled city Mayor Zenaida Moya-Flowers.

The vote came after she publicly criticized Prime Minister Dean Barrow following her arrest on corruption charges last week.

The National Party Council voted to kick the Mayor out of the party.

Prime Minister Barrow said the UDP used the opportunity to publicly recommit itself to the principles of accountability and transparency.

The mayor was charged after a forensic audit of the City Council\'s accounts found that US$139,000 was unaccounted for.
