Jazz Must Be returns for second year
Following on the success of last year’s first staging, Jazz Must Be ft Apryl Jaye, a one-night showcase of Jamaica’s jazz-reggae excellence, is back again this year. Scheduled for November 13 at The Summit Kingston (formerly the Knutsford Court Hotel), Island Car Rentals is on board as title sponsor.
Last year, the audience was thrilled by Apryl-Jaye’s smooth, evocative vocals and a surprise appearance by the legendary Dean Fraser, and this year’s edition, the organisers say, “promises even more artistry and unforgettable moments”.
“My goal is to fill the room with music that moves the heart,” stated Apryl Jaye, curator and vocalist. “I feel deeply with every song I sing, creating medleys and arrangements that weave together jazz, reggae, and other genres. Last year, we added a surprise element with Dean Fraser, who was not advertised on the bill. That sense of wonder and delight is something I hope to carry forward in every staging.”
This year, the stage expands with a larger ensemble, featuring horns and other instruments, alongside a carefully curated set list. Acclaimed musicians Lamont ‘Monty’ Savory, Okiel McIntyre, and Oral Brown will headline the band, with a special guest artiste and a noteworthy arranger.
“With Island Car Rentals as the title sponsor, alongside FMA Customs Brokers, Jazz Must Be continues its mission of celebrating Jamaican musicianship at the highest level,” the organisers stated in a press release.
The programme will honour artistes who have come before, both locally and internationally, and feature a segment arranged by a musician and arranger of note. It will also include a surprise guest artiste. Seating is limited, and tickets are pre-sold only.
A vocalist known for blending jazz phrasing with reggae rhythms, Apryl Jaye holds a postgraduate diploma in jazz and commercial music from Humber College in Toronto and has performed at venues across Kingston, including ROK Hotel, Spanish Court Hotel, Strawberry Hill, and Terra Nova Hotel. She has also opened for reggae artistes such as Maxi Priest and Lukie D.
A Jamaican-owned and operated car rental company, with more than 45 years of service, Island Car Rentals continues its tradition of supporting excellence, culture, and community.
