Letter of the Day | Hopes for better checks and balances
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing with reference to the article, ‘Not a victory by default,’ says Holness JLP’s election win,’ published in The Gleaner September 4.
The electorates have spoken. They have given the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Prime Minister-designate Andrew Holness, and the JLP team, the mandate to govern the people of Jamaica for the next five years. Also, they have given the JLP a historic third-term in office.
The election was very competitive and the race was tight. The JLP won 34 seats and the People’s National Party won 29 seats. The turn out was low at 38.8 per cent wherein in 2020 it was around 37 per cent. This means leaders have to go back to the drawing board and must better engage and inspire the public to vote.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding and his team should be commended for delivering results that matter and making the race competitive by wining 29 out of 63 seats.
Thus, ensure that after a JLP prime minister is sworn-in that the next Parliament will have checks and balances, and there will be vibrant democracy.
