High-schools U-14, U-16 rugby off to promising start

The 2018 national Under-14 and Under-16 high-school rugby league championships got off to a promising start with an increased 19 teams from 11 schools participating, Calabar High are the defending champions at both age groups.

In the Under-14 category, Kingston College, Calabar, Spanish Town High, and St Catherine High are joined by newcomers, Cedar Grove Academy, Old Harbour High and BB Coke High.

Old Harbour won on debut against Kingston College and Cedar Grove's draw with St. Catherine were the surprise results from round one.

Among the Under-16s, Calabar, Kingston College, Campion College, Clan Carthy, St George's College, Spanish Town, St Catherine, Old Harbour, Bog Walk and B.B. Coke High are vying for supremacy.

Old Harbour and Cedar Grove, defeating Kingston College, and St Catherine, respectively, provided the upsets of the opening week.

Old Harbour coach Devaughn Stewart was upbeat after a winning start in both competitions.

"Our team has grown a lot over the past few months. The players are committed and willing. We expect to do well against more seasoned opponents," he said.

VCB Foundation 5K Road race a success 

The 2018 edition of the Veronica Campbell Brown Foundation 5K Road Race was a resounding success. The event was staged in the community of Hayes, Clarendon and specifically from the campus of Vere Technical, the former high school of Jamaican track star Veronica Campbell Brown. Campbell Brown's husband, Omar, a Commonwealth Games 200m gold medallist, was also in attendance.

Oshane Archibald of G.C. Foster continued his good form on the road race circuit, winning the 5K event in 16 minutes ahead of teammate Henry Thomas.

Quite fittingly, Trevan Mills, a schoolboy from Campbell Brown's alma mater, was third in a good time of 19:21. Britnie Dixon, also of Vere, was the first schoolgirl to cross the line in 20:16.

The walk events were dominated by the Manchester pair of Duvwell Allen who completed the course in 25:41 and Natasha McKenzie in 32:13.

The list of sponsors included The Gleaner, Juici Patties, National Commercial Bank, Jamaica Pegasus and Jamaica Blue.

Vere snap Tru-Juice's unbeaten Super League run

Vere United of Clarendon cut down St Catherine's Tru Juice 1-0 last weekend in the Charley's/JB Rum South Central Confed Super League to end a three-week run in which the St Catherine team beat all before it.

Christopher Randall scored the crucial goal in the last-minute of play to highlight an interesting round of results last weekend.

Two of the three St Elizabeth teams had winning results. Last year's beaten finalists, St Bess, travelled to Manchester to defeat Greenvale 2-1 and Blackstars whipped Clarendon's Moores FC 5-0. In another match Porus of Manchester beat Real Treasure Beach FC 2-0.

In other results, Old Harbour Bay FC courtesy of Tajay Baker's hat-trick, defeated Manchester's Downs 5-1 while York Town and Sporting Central ended 4-4 in a Clarendon derby.

Pre Florida Shoot set for Mandeville tomorrow

Tomorrow's pre Florida Open Shoot pistol match in Mandeville will take the spotlight on the local calendar.

The shoot is the first official tournament of the new year but has added prominence because it is the last opportunity for the local-based professional shooters to engage in a match under international regulations. The stages will also attempt to mimic some of the proposed stage offerings for the Florida Open, a popular tournament for all professional shooters.

Tomorrow's shoot fest will take place at the Manchester Rifle and Pistol Club range in Lincoln. The competition starts at 10:30 a.m., but the range will be opened from 8:30a.m., to accommodate practise as well as novice shooters and regular licensed firearm holders.

The match will be shot along United States Practical Shooting Association standards, and officiating will be provided by professionals from the Jamaica Rifle Association.

There will be eight stages with 125 rounds. Shooters can opt to shoot in Open, Standard and Production Divisions.

As part of the package of prizes on offer, the organisers promise a trophy for first and second-place finishers in every division.
