Wheat products will cost more

President of the Bakers’ Association, Gerry Chambers, said the price of wheat is expected to increase.

Mr. Chambers said the 10 percent increase would be incurred on the next shipment of wheat that comes into the island, and will affect the price of baked goods.

According to Mr. Chambers, the cumulative increase on baking flour and wheat has spiralled to almost 50 percent since September of last year.

He also said the recent increases in yeast, shortening and sugar has impacted the price of baked products.

The instability in wheat prices has been influenced by the increased demand for corn as feedstock and for ethanol production.
