Scotiabank has condemned the break-in and robbery involving the automated teller machines (ATMs) at its Portmore, St Catherine, branch.

The bank described the incident as a direct attack not only on its operations but also on the service and reliability it has worked diligently to build over the years.

It noted that the incident has disrupted ATM services at the branch.

"Efforts to restore ATM services at the Portmore location as quickly as possible are under way. Clients are also encouraged to use other Scotiabank ATM locations to conduct their business or access services via our digital banking platforms," the bank said.

According to the police, between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, the culprits gained access to the ATMs, stole the cash and escaped.

The theft was discovered during routine checks by security personnel, who observed that the door to the facility was partially open, the police reported.

Although the exact amount of cash stolen has not been determined, it is believed to be substantial.

Scotiabank said it is cooperating with law enforcement authorities as investigations into the matter continue.

According to the bank, the latest break-in follows a series of criminal attacks targeting the financial sector, including incidents involving other ATM networks and cash-in-transit personnel.

The bank noted that it has continued to make substantial investments in upgrading its ATMs in recent years, and said the repeated incidents of vandalism highlight the need for ongoing collaboration among financial institutions, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to combat criminal activity and safeguard critical financial infrastructure.
