WESTERN BUREAU: Opposition Leader Mark Golding has unveiled a five-point recovery strategy for western Jamaica, accusing the Government of failing thousands of residents still struggling to rebuild their homes, businesses and livelihoods nearly 11 months after Hurricane Melissa.

WASHINGTON, DC (AP): United States President Donald Trump said Sunday that the massive arch he wants to build between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery would become a “top grade military complex” able to host drones and snipers while storing ammunition. It is one more example of how Trump is insisting that his initiatives to beautify the White House and the city are also serving a defensive purpose. Trump has been calling the new White House ballroom a “military complex” and arguing it is necessary for national security purposes.

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Michael Ricketts, says the organisation has been working to ensure that the country’s Under-17 team is fully prepared for this year’s World Cup. The Young Reggae Boyz have been drawn in Group E alongside Italy, Ivory Coast and Uzbekistan for the tournament in Qatar in November. Jamaica will be making their third appearance at an Under-17 World Cup after topping their group in the Concacaf qualifying tournament in Alajuela, Costa Rica, in February.

The announcement that Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley has been named by The University of the West Indies as one of 13 honorees for its 2026 graduation ceremonies has been welcomed wholeheartedly by family and musical friends. In unveiling the honorees last week, The UWI noted that “the award of these prestigious honorary degrees continues the university’s long-standing tradition of celebrating the region’s most notable luminaries for their contributions to Caribbean life and development”. Expressing her total delight at this award was Damian’s mother, Cindy Breakspeare.

Jamaica raised US$1 billion from the international capital markets on Wednesday at a coupon of 6.25 per cent, the lowest coupon the country has paid on an international bond. It was the government’s first US dollar issuance in more than a decade and its first benchmark transaction since Hurricane Melissa struck in October 2025, causing damage exceeding half of Jamaica’s annual output.
