Demand outpacing recovery in tourism bounceback

WESTERN BUREAU: Jamaica’s tourism industry is facing an unusual post-hurricane challenge: demand for the destination is running ahead of the country’s ability to accommodate it. Eight months into the year, flights to the island are operating at an average 85 per cent load factor even though available airline seats have fallen 22 per cent year-on-year, yet approximately 30 per cent of the hotel room stock affected by Hurricane Melissa is still to return to service.

Education ministry allocates $714 million for school maintenance programme

The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information has allocated $714 million to its maintenance programme for the 2026/2027 fiscal year. This was disclosed by Director of Technical Services, Carey Brown, during a special briefing held on Monday at the ministry's Caenwood Centre Complex in Kingston. He advised that the maintenance programme includes infant-school projects and the rehabilitation of special education facilities. Brown said the programme also covers staff-room improvements and addresses termite infestations in schools.

England will begin registering private landlords and their rental properties on a national database from December 15, introducing a system intended to give tenants, councils and responsible property owners clearer information about the homes being rented. The first landlords will be enrolled in the West Midlands before the programme is extended across England. Those operating in each region will receive three months to register, with all actively rented private properties expected to be entered by November 14, 2027.
