Repairs to more than half of the schools severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa should be completed by the end of the year, Dr Kasan Troupe, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, has disclosed. Addressing yesterday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House in St Andrew, Troupe said renovations at 57 of the more than 300 schools that were extensively damaged by Hurricane Melissa last year have been completed. A further 95 should be completed by the end of October, while an additional 34 are expected to be repaired by December.

Councillor urges vigilance after alleged abduction, sexual assault of 10-year-old in Clarendon

Councillor Scean Barnswell is urging residents and other stakeholders to intensify their vigilance and assist the police investigation into the reported abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Mineral Heights, Clarendon, on Tuesday morning. The child was reportedly on her way to school when she exited a taxi near the entrance to the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme, and was approached by a man who reportedly persuaded her to enter a vehicle.

Councillor seeks $8.2 million annual allocation for Mount Industry Division

Councillor Correll Davis of the Mount Industry Division in the St Catherine Municipal Corporation is recommending that the annual allocation for her division be increased from $3.2 million to $8.2 million. Davis told Chairman Norman Scott at the corporation’s monthly general meeting on Thursday that she requires at least an additional $5 million to carry out roadworks and other infrastructure development in the division.

Councillor calls for increase in PATH grants for schoolchildren

A call has been made for the Government to increase the financial assistance provided to schoolchildren who are beneficiaries of the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH). Waterford Municipal Division Councillor Dr Fenley Douglas made the call on Thursday at the monthly general meeting of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, arguing that the current sums provided to students for meals are inadequate.

Three cops shot in MoBay operation

Western Bureau: Acting Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake is warning criminals against confronting members of the security forces after two policemen and a policewoman were shot and a wanted man killed during an early-morning operation in Mount Salem, St James, yesterday. Twenty-nine-year-old Romario Brown, otherwise called ‘Jerry’, was shot during a confrontation with members of the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team (AFAT) along Crawford Street shortly after 3 a.m.
