A new children’s book is bringing Jamaica’s rich folklore traditions to life through an imaginative and suspense-filled adventure designed for young readers. Jabari and the Shady Shortcut, an illustrated Jamaican folklore tale written by Lemar Archer, invites readers into a world where ignored counsel from ‘old-time’ sayings carry real consequences.

The story follows Jabari, a boy who prefers the quick and easy way home, brushing aside his grandmother Sophie’s constant warning: “Shortcut draw blood!” One fateful night, his decision to take a shortcut leads him into a frightening encounter with one of Jamaica’s most feared legends. What begins as a simple choice quickly spirals into a tense situation, forcing Jabari to rely on the very wisdom he once ignored.

Reminiscent of the adventurous nature and innocence of youth, and infused with cultural education, the book explores themes such as choices and consequences and the wisdom of elders. Crafted for young readers 8–12 years old, the story also resonates with families, offering both entertainment and meaningful life lessons rooted in Caribbean heritage.

More than just a story, Jabari and the Shady Shortcut serves as a cultural bridge, introducing children to Jamaican folklore through vivid storytelling and imagination. Recently named a category winner (Folklore) in the Children’s Book International 2026 Awards, the publication stands out for its engaging narrative and commitment to preserving and celebrating Jamaican culture.

The book also includes a glossary of Jamaican proverbs and sayings, along with translations of Jamaican Patois words and expressions into Jamaican Standard English, enhancing cultural representation and learning.

With its gripping storyline and strong cultural foundation, Jabari and the Shady Shortcut is a compelling addition to children’s literature, reminding readers that sometimes, the long way home is the safest path.
