Letter of the Day | Manchester must choose peace over conflict

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The recent rise in murders in Manchester Parish should concern every resident of the parish. While statistics may show numbers increasing, the real issue is not just the figures, but what they reveal about how we as a society are handling conflict. Too many disputes – whether domestic disagreements or conflicts over money are ending in violence when they should never reach that point.

Manchester has long been known as a relatively peaceful parish. That reputation, however, is now being challenged by a troubling trend where arguments quickly escalate into deadly encounters. What is particularly disturbing is that many of these situations reportedly begin with issues that could have been resolved through conversation, mediation, or simple patience.

The reality is that policing alone cannot fix this problem. While law enforcement in places like St Andrew North Police Division may currently be experiencing fewer violent incidents, the difference may lie less in enforcement and more in the choices citizens make when faced with conflict. Communities must recognise that every act of violence begins with a decision and a moment when someone chooses anger instead of restraint.

Domestic violence is another deeply troubling aspect of this issue. Homes should be places of safety, not environments where disagreements escalate into tragedy. If we truly want to reduce violence in Manchester, we must confront the culture that normalizes aggression and encourages people to settle disputes with force.

The responsibility does not fall solely on the police or the government. Parents, community leaders, churches, and educators must all play a role in teaching young people that conflict is a normal part of life, but violence is not an acceptable response to it.

Manchester stands at a crossroads. The parish can either allow these incidents to become the new normal or take deliberate steps to restore the peace and sense of community for which it has long been known. The choice ultimately lies with the people of Manchester.
